Cabo Mondego Section in Amsterdam

After a concert by guitarist Marc Ribot and his quartet Hurry Red Telephone at the Bimhuis, the Cabo Mondego Section of Portuguese Surrealism walked to my studio and worked together until half past two in the morning. Fourteen pastel drawings emerged that night, made to the accompaniment of strange, rhythmic music. Taking part were Miguel de Carvalho, Rik Lina, David Coulter and I.

The Cabo Mondego Section is an international group of surrealists who work together in the tradition of automatism, where the work grows out of shared, spontaneous gestures rather than a single hand. Automatic writing, chance, and free association flow from hand to hand, so that the final work belongs to no single creator.
